Enrico Sertoli

Enrico Sertoli (* June 6, 1842 in Sondrio, † January 28, 1910 ) was an Italian physiologist and histologist who described the later named after him Sertoli cells of the seminiferous tubules ( seminiferous tubules ).

Life

Enrico Sertoli was one of five sons of the architect Giuseppe Sertoli. He studied at the University of Pavia medicine. Among his teachers was Eusebio Oehl. Sertoli completed his studies in 1865 and went on to do research at the University of Vienna Ernst Wilhelm von bridge. The following year he returned to Italy to take part in the war of 1866. Sertoli fought under Enrico Guicciardi in northern Italy against Austria and was subsequently sent to quell an uprising to Palermo.

1867 Sertoli left the military and went to the University of Tübingen, where he held the function of blood proteins and the elimination of carbonic examined at Felix Hoppe- Seyler.

From 1870 onwards, Sertoli was professor of anatomy and physiology at the Royal School of Veterinary Medicine in Milan. Following a restructuring of the Institute he was only a lecturer in physiology. In 1907, he went into retirement and settled in his native town, where he died in 1910.

Enrico Sertoli was not married and had no children.

Work

1865 described the morphology of the Sertoli later named after him Sertoli cells of the seminiferous tubules ( seminiferous tubules ).
