Enrique Almaraz y Santos

Enrique Cardinal Almaraz y Santos ( born September 22, 1847 in La Vellés; † January 22, 1922 in Madrid) was Archbishop of Seville, later archbishop of Toledo and primate of Spain and honorary citizen of Seville, Palencia and Puerto de Santa María.

Life

He studied at the Central Seminar Salamanca, which in 1876 a doctorate in theology gave him and he received a licentiate in canon law. In 1874 he was ordained a priest for the diocese of Salamanca and was doing pastoral work. He was a member of the faculty of the seminary of Salamanca and was Domscholaster in 1874. During this time he was appointed to the Pontifical chamberlain. He moved to Madrid, where he was a preacher of the royal chamber at the court of the king. He served as secretary to the bishop of Madrid and was a member of the faculty of the Seminary of Madrid. In April 1886 he was elected Vicar General and 1891 Archpriest and Dean of the Cathedral Chapter of Madrid.

Pope Leo XIII. . appointed him Bishop of Palencia on January 18, 1893 The Archbishop of Valencia, Cardinal Ciriaco María Sancha y Hervás, San Isidro gave him on 16 April of the same year in the Collegiate Church de episcopal ordination; Co-consecrators were José María Cos y Macho, Archbishop ad personam of Madrid, Jaime Cardona y Tur, military vicar general of Spain. He was Senator of the Spanish Kingdom from 1899 to 1902. On April 18, 1907 he was elevated to Metropolitan of Seville. He was reelected in November 1907 as Senator of the Spanish kingdom and remained until his death in office.

Pius X took him on 27 November 1911 as cardinal priest in the College of Cardinals, and he got on 2nd December of the same year, the titular church of San Pietro in Montorio. He participated in the conclave of 1914, which Benedict XV. chose. On 16 December 1920 he was appointed Archbishop of Toledo. He was buried in the Cathedral of Toledo.
