Enrique Larreta

Enrique Larreta, actually Enrique Rodríguez Larreta Maza ( born March 4, 1875 in Buenos Aires, † July 6, 1961 ) was an Argentine diplomat and writer.

Life

Larreta came from an upper middle class family in Uruguay: his parents were Carlos Rodríguez Larreta († 1915) and Adela Augustina Maza Oribe († 1899). His school, he graduated with the help of tutors, and then studied law at the university of his native city, and shut this study in 1897 successfully.

Subsequently Larreta began to teach medieval history at the Colegio Nacional de Buenos Aires. On November 15, 1900, he married Josefina Anacleta Anchorena and had with her five children: Enrique (* 1902), Josefina (* 1905), Agustín (* 1909), Fernando ( born 1911 ) and Mercedes. Through his marriage Larreta was associated with a very influential family.

As Roque Sáenz Peña in 1910 was president of Argentina, he sent Larreta as a diplomat to France. 1915 could be Larreta for a year in Ávila, where he among other things, Miguel de Unamuno met. In 1919 he returned to Buenos Aires and devoted himself for the rest of his life only to write. Larreta also lived in Seville for several years, where he among other things, helped in 1929 to make the Exposicià Iberoamericana de Sevilla.

At the age of 86 years Enrique Larreta died on July 6, 1961 in Buenos Aires and found his final resting place in the cemetery of La Recoleta. His house in Belgrano, which had been designed in 1886 by the architect Ernesto Bunge ( 1839-1913 ), including a large park, was converted in 1962 to the Museo de Arte Español Enrique Larreta.

Reception

Larretas work spans from Vanguardia to Modernism. He has written novels, plays and several volumes of poetry; as his most famous work applies the novel " La gloria de Don Ramiro ". That Larreta his life had also collected art, can be seen in his home and the current museum.
