Épernon

Épernon is a commune with 5455 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Eure- et- Loir in the Centre region. The inhabitants are called Sparnonien (ne) s or Epernonien (ne) s The city is situated on the banks of the river Drouette, at the confluence of two tributaries Guéville and Guesle.

History

The son of Hugh Capet had the fortresses in Monfort and Épernon build to protect the castle of Saint- Léger. The city Épernon stands at the foot of the castle and stretched out to the shore of Guesle. The name of the city changed over time: Sparro ( 1024), Sparnaïcum ( 1095 ), Esparnonium (~ 1120), Esper Nun (1450 ).

Economy

In Épernon were given the rich sandstone deposits since the 15th century, numerous quarries. Here, among other things, the building material for the aqueduct from Maintenon was promoted.
