Until the designation of the present cathedral (formerly the parish church " Church of the Saviour " ) served St. Mary's in town district Roxborough as a cathedral. The new cathedral is also the ceremonial seat of the Southeastern Pennsylvania Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America ( ELCA ); the Episcopal Church and the ELCA is in full communion.

The current bishop is the Rt Rev. Charles E. Bennison, Jr., the Rt Rev. Clarence Coleridge serves as Auxiliary Bishop. Since November 4, 2007, Bishop Bennison is forbidden to act as a bishop or priest, according to an arrangement of the Presiding Bishop, Katharine Jefferts Schori, as it had failed in 1973 as pastor of a church in California the necessary steps when he heard his brother do an extramarital relationship with a minor. Previously, there has been a long dispute with the cathedral chapter on financial management.
