Erdmuthe of Brandenburg

Erdmuthe of Brandenburg ( born June 26, 1561 in Berlin, † November 13, 1623 in Stolp ) was a princess of Brandenburg and by marriage Duchess of Pomerania.

Life

Erdmuthe was the eldest daughter of the Elector of Brandenburg, Johann Georg (1525-1598) from his second marriage with Sabina (1548-1575), daughter of Margrave George of Brandenburg -Ansbach. The princess was because of her affection for science and Latin literature as a favorite child of her father.

They married on February 17, 1577 in Stettin Duke Johann Friedrich of Pomerania ( 1542-1600 ). At the age of 7 years, she had been engaged to the 26 -year-old Johann Friedrich. On this occasion the old Erbverbrüderungen of the two houses were redetermined and set the entitlements in the extinction event. The marriage remained childless described as happy. After a miscarriage she received from Elizabeth of Doberschütz an antipyretic agent, and later was accused Elizabeth of Doberschütz to have made the Duchess so bewitched and barren.

Erdmuthe was instrumental in the initiation of the marriage of her nephew Christian II of Saxony with Hedwig of Denmark. She wrote for her sister Sophie in 1596, a prayer book, which is one of the oldest prayer books for women.

After her husband's death on February 9, 1600, the Board received Erdmuthe Stolp as jointure and lived in the Castle of Stolp and since 1608 ( after the death of Schwantes of Tessenberg ) on the castle, which belonged to the Vorwerk of Schmolsin. She relied Michael Brüggemann ( Latinized Pontanus, Polish Michał Mostnik ) as chaplain to the Castle Church Stolp.
