Erich Leinsdorf

Erich Leinsdorf, born Erich Landauer ( born February 4, 1912 in Vienna, † 11 September 1993 Zurich ) was an Austrian conductor, who as an assistant went to the Metropolitan Opera in 1937 and then in 1938 after the annexation of Austria by Nazi German Reich in could remain the U.S., where he received citizenship in 1942.

He studied in his native city and graduated in 1933 with diploma. The following year he became an assistant Bruno Walter and Arturo Toscanini at the Salzburg Festival. In 1937 he conducted for the first time at the Metropolitan Opera, where he permanently established itself as a European refugee in the following year. After the war he conducted occasionally in Europe again, but worked mainly in America, where he was particularly appreciated as a Wagner conductor, but also as a Turandot by Giacomo Puccini grossed ( with Birgit Nilsson, Jussi Björling and Renata Tebaldi ). General was Leinsdorf, partly due to his training as a typical opera conductor.

1956 Leinsdorf was a season of the director of the New York City Opera, 1962 he was the successor of Charles Münch as chief conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. 1978-1981 he worked intensively with the Radio Symphony Orchestra Berlin, now Deutsches Symphonie -Orchester Berlin, together with whom he undertook a highly regarded East Asia tour in June 1980.

Leinsdorf took symphonies and other orchestral works, including Ludwig van Beethoven, Johannes Brahms, Anton Bruckner, Béla Bartók ( Concerto for Orchestra; Magyar képek ), Zoltán Kodály ( Háry János Suite ), Franz Schmidt, Gustav Mahler ( Symphony No. 1 (" Titan " ) ), Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart ( complete symphonies ) and Sergei Prokofiev.
