Erich Sackmann

Erich Sackmann (* November 26, 1934 in Baiersbronn ) is a German Professor Emeritus of Experimental Physics.

Life

Sackmann studied at the University of Stuttgart and received his PhD in 1964. According stays at the Bell Telephone Laboratories in Murray Hill, NJ, USA and the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Göttingen, he habilitated in 1974 and received in the same year as a professor at the University of Ulm. In 1980 he was appointed professor at the Faculty of Physics at the Technical University of Munich.

Sackmann is one of the most important and influential biophysicist Germany. In the field of cell biophysics, in particular the study of lipid membranes and the mechanics of the cytoskeleton, he presented basic work. The investigation of membranes is also a neutron at the research neutron source Heinz Maier- Leibnitz, in the development Sackmann was instrumental.

The German Physical Society (DPG ) praised Sackmann 2006 with the awarding of the Stern-Gerlach Medal, the highest award for DPG Experimental Physics. In the eulogy read:

" [ ... ] In recognition of his pioneering results for understanding the dynamics of membranes and biopolymer networks, the mechanical properties of membranes and cell - surface interaction. He has established the physics of biological systems. "

In 2001 he was awarded the Wolfgang Ostwald price.
