Erie [ ɪəri ] is a city in the northwestern part of the U.S. state of Pennsylvania with 101 786 inhabitants ( 2010). The city is located on Lake Erie and is the county seat of Erie County.
Erie to Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Allentown the fourth largest city in Pennsylvania.
The place is home of the U.S. Brig Niagara. The Niagara is a brig, which was ordered in 1813 in the " Battle of Lake Erie " by Oliver Hazard Perry. Today, Niagara is the official flagship of the State of Pennsylvania. Because Erie is the hometown of the ship, the city is also called "The Flagship City".

History
For the first time the French settled in the area of Erie. They built Fort Presque Isle in 1753. It served as defense posts against the English.
The town of Erie was part of the Erie Triangle, which was claimed by the states of Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York and Pennsylvania. 1792 area of the city officially became part of Pennsylvania. The city, however, was only founded in 1795.
Since 1853, the city is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Erie.
In 2007 the city received from a donor who wished to remain anonymous, 100 million U.S. dollars as a donation to the commission to distribute the money to the charities of the city.
