Erigyius

Erigyios (Greek Ἐρίγυιος; † 328 BC ), son of Larichos and brother of Laomedon, was a commander of Alexander the Great.

Erigyios was a Greek native of Mytilene, but was probably just like his brother in Amphipolis by King Philip II granted the Macedonian citizenship. The brothers apparently belonged to an older generation than Alexander, because Erigyios was described by Curtius Rufus for the year 330 BC as a " white-haired ". In connection with the " Pixodaros affair" in the year 336 BC, he accompanied Alexander, along with his brother, Nearchus, Ptolemy and Harpalus, into exile and only returned after the assassination of Philip II and Alexander came to power in the same year the back yard.

During the Asia campaign Erigyios led the cavalry of the Greek federal troops at the Battle of Issus (333 BC) and was responsible for securing the province Coelesyria ( 332/1 BC) responsible. In the battle of Gaugamela (331 BC) he led again to the Greek cavalry. In the following year he accompanied Alexander from Ecbatana in pursuit of Darius III. and went with him through media and Parthia. He took part in the subjugation of the province Hyrcania whose satrap Satibarzanes arose immediately and was therefore left in his office. When the army was, however, moved on to the East, Satibarzanes revolted and occupied the province Areia. Erigyios was sent along with Artabazus and Karanos to Areia to bring the province back under control. In a duel he killed Satibarzanes by hand, by throwing him his spear into its neck. He then beheaded him to use his head as a trophy.

On Yaxartes Erigyios, Hephaestion and Craterus tried in vain to dissuade Alexander from crossing the river for a subsequent fight against the Scythians. In the winter of 328 BC Erigyios died in Sogdiana after an illness and was buried in a solemn ceremony.
