Erik Ã…gren (boxer)

Erik Alfred Ågren ( born January 3, 1916 in Ytterselö, community Strängnäs; † 3 July 1985 in Hägersten ) was a Swedish boxer. He won at the Olympics in Berlin in 1936 the bronze medal in the lightweight and was Vice-European Champion 1939 in Dublin welterweight.

Career

Erik Ågren began as a teenager along with his brothers Oscar, Carl and Ture with the boxes. He boxed for Narva BK. His coaches were there Olof Johansson and the Swedish national team, in which he aufrückte soon, Arvid " Lunkan " Lundquist.

As a 20 -year-old newcomer nicknamed " Jerka " he qualified in 1936 for participation in the Olympic Games in Berlin. He started there in lightweight. In his first fight he won on points over each Lorenzo Delgado, Mexico, Mario Facchin, Italy and Andrew Scrivani from the U.S.. In the semifinals he met Nikolai Stepulov from Estonia, losing just under on points. In the battle for the bronze medal, which was then still be boxing, he was without a fight winner over Poul Kops from Denmark.

1937 started Erik Ågren also at the European Championships in Milan. He stood again at lightweight in his first fight and defeated the Olympic champion of Berlin Harangi Imre from Hungary clear on points. But in the quarter-finals he lost to Herbert Nuremberg Germany and came as no medal.

In 1938, during a struggle countries Sweden against Germany in Stockholm he had a points victory over the strong Heinrich Heese from Dusseldorf. In an elimination tournament for European boxing team that would travel to comparison struggles in the United States, he was defeated, however, in Berlin in 1938 against Herbert Nuremberg by KO in the 1st round.

1939 Erik Ågren was at the European Championships in Dublin amateur welterweight at the start. He won there in the quarterfinals on Constantine Tjasto from Latvia by KO in the 1st round and defeated in the semifinals Robert Thomas from England on points. In the final he was defeated by Poland Antoni Kolczynski and thus won the European Championship silver medal.

1940 represented Erik Ågren Europe on a competition trip to the U.S.. He boxed there twice. In Chicago, he was defeated by Savior Canadeo on points and in Nashville, he triumphed over Charles Easley on points. Erik Ågren was in 1941 in Stockholm, the Swedish team against Germany and won there in lightweight over Horst Garz from Magdeburg on points.

Erik Ågren was from 1937 to 1941 Swedish champion at lightweight over the years. In 1942, he lost the final against welterweight Börje Wretman on points.
