Erik Schmidt

Erik Schmidt ( born August 15, 1925 on Naissaar, Estonia) is a painter and writer. His uncle was the optician Bernhard Schmidt.

Life

Schmidt attended the local Swedish school after the fourth grade, he joined the Swedish high school to Haapsalu. When in 1940 the whole Soviet Estonia, Naissaar was declared a naval base. The population had to leave within ten days of the island. A short time later was Schmidt's ship sunk by a German attack in the Atlantic captain. Captain Schmidt and the crew survived. In 1941, Estonia was occupied by the German troops, the Smith family was able to return Naissaar.

At 17, Erik Schmidt was a teacher at the primary school, which he had visited a few years earlier self. This freed him both before the military service in the Estonian Legion as well as before the service obligation in the Reich Labor Service. End of October 1943, the Schmidt family fled the approaching Red Army to Sweden, where she was picked up by the shipowner family Brodin. Erik Schmidt was after the war ended in 1945, Sailor, he made his first trips on the ships of the Brodin cargo and passenger line, the ships at that time were regarded as the fastest ships around the world. After one year, Schmidt was drafted for service in the Swedish Navy.

On a visit to New York City he met the Armenian painter Ariel Agemian. After briefly teaching at Agemian Schmidt decided to become a painter himself. After a stay in Sweden in 1949, he studied from 1950 to 1953 at the École supérieure national des beaux -arts de Paris. In 1954 he went for a year to Johannesburg, South Africa, and there created a series of portraits that established his reputation as a portrait painter. After a stay in Stockholm Schmidt went to Palma de Mallorca in 1957, where he still lives and works today. The Society of Swedish culture estonia ( Samfundet promote Estlandssvensk culture) gave him two awards.

Erik Schmidt describes his philosophy of seeing and painting as follows:

" All around us is beauty. It is the job of the artist to explore and play to please the people so that beauty. "

The subjects of his pictures are often people in rural surroundings. Erik Schmidt paints exclusively with a method developed by him mixture of black oil and mastic, their drying properties, it may affect. Its colors range from gray and ocher tones, inspired by the Nordic coastal landscapes of his youth, over the vivid color change of the sky and the lake to the lively tones that he had met during his visits India and the Arab countries.
