Erika Simon

Erika Simon (* June 27, 1927 in Rheingönheim ) is a German classical archaeologist.

Life

1952 Erika Simon earned his doctorate under Reinhard Herbig in Heidelberg with a study of sacrificer gods. 1952/53, she received a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute and was then assistant to Roland Hampe at the University of Mainz, where she was habilitated in 1957. In 1958 she qualified as a professor at Heidelberg and taught there as an impairment professor. In 1964, she was Associate Professor of Classical Archaeology at the University of Würzburg and Director of the Antiquities Department of the Martin-von -Wagner- Museum; since 1994 she has been Professor Emeritus.

Her research focuses Erika Simon with the iconography of the Greeks and Romans, especially of the gods, Greek vases and picture programs of Roman art ( for example, the statue Augustus of Prima Porta and the Ara Pacis ). Their research on the Etruscan studies are considered relevant.

She is a regular member of the German Archaeological Institute, Member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences (since 1978) and an honorary member of numerous institutions ( including the Society for the Promotion of Hellenic Studies in London) and Honorary Doctor of the University Thessalonik and the University of Athens (2006).

For her contributions to the science Erika Simon has been honored with numerous awards, including the Golden Athos Cross of St. Mark's Order of the Patriarchate of Alexandria, the Ernst Hellmut Vits Prize of the University of Münster, the German Federal Cross of Merit, the Medal Pro Meritis the Bavarian Ministry of Culture and the Bavarian Order of Merit.
