Erna Spoorenberg

Erna Spoorenberg ( born April 11, 1926 in Yogyakarta, Java as Huberdina Aletta Spoorenberg, † March 18, 2004 in Vught ) was a Dutch soprano. She is primarily known for her roles in operas by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Life and work

Erna Spoorenberg was the daughter of Dutch parents Wilhelmus Hubertus Barbara Spoorenberg ( born June 1, 1882 in Helmond ) and Thérèse Agnes Backer Overbeek (* August 4, 1880 in Oisterwijk ) with whom she came to the Netherlands in 1929.

She studied violin, among others, Julius Röntgen, and singing, among others, Isa Neuhaus and Aaltje Noordewier - Reddingius. During her studies at the Amsterdam Conservatory, she decided on a career as a singer.

In 1947 she debuted on Radio Hilversum with the motet Exsultate, jubilate by Mozart. In 1949 she imagines Karl Böhm and received a contract at the Vienna State Opera, where she debuted with Pamina in The Magic Flute. In 1955 she returned to the Netherlands and made ​​her debut at the Netherlands Opera in Amsterdam as Violetta in La traviata by Giuseppe Verdi. In 1958 she was a permanent member of the Netherlands Opera. She has appeared in Hamburg and Berlin, 1963 and 1965 in the Soviet Union, where she performed, among others, at the Bolshoi Theater, and 1967 in the United States.

Her repertoire of operatic roles were mainly roles from Mozart operas such as The Magic Flute ( Pamina ), The Abduction from the Seraglio ( Konstanze ), Don Giovanni ( Donna Elvira ), Così fan tutte ( Fiordiligi ) and Le nozze di Figaro. In addition, she sang Norina ( Don Pasquale Gaetano Donizetti ), Laura ( The Beggar Student, Millöcker ), Mistress Ford ( The Merry Wives of Windsor, Otto Nicolai ), Adele ( Die Fledermaus, Johann Strauss son ), Gilda ( Rigoletto, Giuseppe Verdi ) and games from Elektra ( Richard Strauss) and The Tales of Hoffmann (Jacques Offenbach).

In addition to her operatic career she performed for example in the St. Matthew Passion by Johann Sebastian Bach in Naarden and gave concerts in which she was accompanied among others by pianist Géza Frid.

Your last stage appearance was on 16 April 1970, Konstanze in "Abduction from the Seraglio" at the Netherlands Opera in Amsterdam.

From 1970 she began working as a singing teacher. From 1970 to 1977 she taught at the Royal Conservatory in Brussels and from 1971 to 1978 at the Amsterdam Conservatory. From 1978, she worked as a private tutor. She called the competition " Erna Spoorenberg Vocalists Presentatie " to life. She was winner of the Harriet Cohen International Music Awards and in 2002 Commander of the Order of Orange- Nassau.
