Ernâni Lopes

Ernâni Rodrigues Lopes ( born 1942 in Lisbon, † December 2, 2010 ) was a Portuguese economist and politician ( EEC) is considered the " architect " of Portugal's accession to the European Economic Community.

Biography

After school he studied at the Institute of Economy and Finance (Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestão ( ISEG ) ) and graduated in 1964 with a licentiate. After training as an officer in the Navy Reserve from 1966 to 1974 he was Assistant Professor at ISEG and also in 1967, employees of the Banco de Portugal, the central bank of the country. At first he was Technical Assistant in the Office of Statistics and studies before he was director of this office in 1975.

Immediately after he was introduced in 1975 Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany and remained in that post until 1979. Afterwards, he was from 1979 to 1983 Head of the Diplomatic Mission of Portugal to the European Economic Community (EEC) and was also the rank of Ambassador in charge of negotiations for accession to the EEC. During this time, in 1982 his doctorate in economics at the Catholic University of Portugal.

On 9 June 1983, he became Prime Minister Mário Soares as Minister of Finance and Planning in the government. He held until the end of Soares ' office on 6 November 1985 this function. He was again instrumental in charge at the conclusion of the accession negotiations, and also led the program of the International Monetary Fund (IMF ) in Portugal.

He became director of the Institute for European Studies at the Catholic University of Portugal in 1996 and was also temporarily managing partner of consulting firm Saer.

Lopes died after several years of disease to lymph node cancer.
