Ernest, Duke of Opava

Ernst of Opava (Czech: Arnost Opavský; * 1415, † 1464 ) was 1433-1461 Duke of Opava and 1452-1456 Duke of Münsterberg. He came from the Opava branch of the Bohemian Přemyslids.

Life

His parents were Přemysl I of Opava († 1433 ) and Catherine, a sister of the last Piast Johann Berger Münster. Along with his four brothers, he inherited after the death of the father whose possessions left behind. Although they should not share the possessions according to the will of the Father, it was 1434/35 to an inheritance among the brethren.

1451 gave him the elder brother of William the hereditary claim to the Duchy of Münsterberg and received by Ernst in return its third share of the Duchy of Opava. This included Wilhelm now two-thirds of Opava.

After William's death in 1452, the Duchy of Münsterberg dropped as agreed in 1451 to Ernst, who also took over the guardianship of William's children. As their guardian, he sold after 1454 William's two-thirds share of the Opava Opole Duke Bolko V.. The belongings of the Duchy of Münsterberg he sold on March 8, 1456 at the Bohemian Landesverweser and future King George of Podiebrad.
