Ernst II, Duke of Brunswick- Lüneburg ( * December 31, 1564, † March 2, 1611 ) was from 1592 to 1611 Prince of Lüneburg.

Life

Ernst was born in 1564 as the second of fifteen children and the eldest son of William the Younger and his wife Dorothea of ​​Denmark. After his studies in Wittenberg, Leipzig and Strasbourg, he returned due to the increasingly deteriorating health of his father back to Celle. In 1592 he took over after his father's death the government. First, limited by a treaty with his brother Christian and the stands 8 years, he held the government after completion of another agreement until his death in 1611. His reign was marked by an attempt to improve the financial situation of both the Principality and the family, since his father left him a completely debt-free country. Also worthy of note is the completed under him Celler family agreement from 1610, which guaranteed the indivisibility of the principality and was confirmed by Emperor Matthias in 1612.

Ernst II was buried in the royal crypt in St. Mary's Church in Celle.
