Ernest, Landgrave of Hesse-Philippsthal

Ernst Eugen Karl August Bernhard Paul Philipp of Hesse- Thal ( born December 20, 1846 in Philippstal, † December 22, 1925 in Eisenach ) out of the house of Hesse was the last Landgrave of Hesse - Philippsthal.

Life

Ernst was the eldest son of the Landgrave Charles II of Hesse- Philippsthal (1803-1868) from his marriage to Marie (1818-1888), daughter of Duke Eugen of Württemberg.

After the Electorate of Hesse, including Hesse - Philippsthal 1866 annexed by Prussia, Ernst, 1868, waived all subsequent claims in Hesse- Philippsthal received, together with Landgrave Alexis of Hesse- Philippsthal - Barchfeld 1880 from the Hessian Fideikommiss a pension of 300,000 marks, and the castles of Hanau, Rotenburg and Schönfeld as Privatfideikommiss Philipp Thaler lines.

Ernst died in 1925 unmarried and without issue. With him went the Hessen- Philippstal and the house of Hesse only flourished so in the lines of Hesse - Philippsthal - Barchfeld and Hesse - Rumpenheim.
