Ernesto Garzón Valdés

Ernesto Garzón Valdés ( born February 17, 1927 in Córdoba, Argentina ) is an Argentine- German legal philosopher, political scientist and university professor.

Life

Garzón Valde studied law, philosophy, political science and sociology in Cordoba, Madrid, Munich, Bonn and Cologne. Until 1974 he was Professor of Philosophy of Law at the Universities of Cordoba and La Plata and a member of the Argentine Foreign Service ( inter alia, head of the cultural department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs ); 1974 saw the posting as ambassador to the Argentine Embassy in Bonn; little later, however, he was the political persecution by the government Isabel Perón exposed with loss of diplomatic and academic positions, so that he lived in exile in Germany.

After teaching at the universities of Bonn, Cologne and Mainz, he was since 1981 Professor of Political Science at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz.

The rehabilitation and resumption of the diplomatic service in the rank of Ambassador took place only in the 1980s under President Alfonsin.

However Garzón Valdés did not return to active diplomatic service back, but remained as a professor at the University of Mainz and was a visiting professor also at numerous universities abroad ( inter alia, in Finland, Italy and Spain, Argentina, Chile, Mexico and Peru ).

Work priorities and work

Garzón Valdés ' main scientific interest is in the analysis of fundamental legal and political science terms (u a: legal validity, stability, tolerance, representation, responsibility, equality, corruption, human dignity, terrorism), Political Ethics ( legitimacy of political systems, social justice, rule of law ) and the political and social conditions in Latin America (especially Argentina and Mexico).

More generally, Garzón Valdés ' work to be regarded as political theory and legal philosophy foundation. He is a classical liberal, which the universal protection of the individual against the arbitrary particular state authorities is a particular concern. This is reflected among others in the rejection of group-related rights, but also in the rejection of cultural relativism. Rights he would generally beyond the reach of arbitrary definitions settle by state authorities. Compared to the positive law Stemming the civil sovereign he is at the same time, however, skeptical and worried accordingly to the stability of constitutional political systems in particular. Issues such as the relationship of law to paternalism and tolerance drove him to even before this general economy had. The choice of topics is certainly also due to his life-long involvement in issues of often very unhappy Argentine practical politics.
