Ernst Gottlieb von Steudel

Ernst Gottlieb ( Theophil ) by Steudel (* May 30, 1783 in Esslingen, † May 12, 1856 ) was a German physician and botanist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Steud. ".

Life

He was the son of Johann Steudel Samson and Regina Catherina Burk. On August 6, 1811, he married in Echterdingen (Neckar district ) Augusta Rosina Sophia Buehrer ( born August 11, 1787), the daughter of Victor Matthew Buehrer and Rosina Elisabeth Godelmann.

Steudel studied from 1801 medicine and science in Tübingen, where he received his doctorate in 1805. After a stay in Switzerland, he was for a time in Vienna and Halle 1806 and returned back to Esslingen, where he settled as a general practitioner. Soon after, he was made a top official veterinarian, and in 1828 the medical officer in the city.

In addition to his professional activities, he also devoted himself to botany and published some work on this. 1821 to 1824 appeared his work Nomenclator botanicus, in which he recorded the names and synonyms of all plant genera and species listed alphabetically. In the second edition, which appeared twenty years later, 6,722 genera and 78 005 species were listed by name. Besides the family, and the growth area, the CAS and the literature references are listed there.

In another work, the " Synopsis plantarum glumacearum " which was planned to eleven volumes, came out in 1855 two books in which the Gramineae, Cyperaceae and Juncaceae and the related taxa are discussed.

With the Esslinger pastor Christian Ferdinand Hochstetter in 1826 he gave out the work Enumeratio plantarum Germaniae helvetiaeque indigenarum seu Prodromus, quem synopsin plantarum Germaniae helvetiaeque edituri botanophilisque adjuvandam comme dantes in which all plant species found in Germany and Switzerland are covered. In addition, he published medical journals.

Together with Christian Friedrich Hochstetter he founded the Württembergischen natural history travel club. Steudel was a member of the Senckenberg Nature Research Society since 1822 Correspondent.
