Ernst Hermann Riesenfeld

Ernst Hermann Riesenfeld ( born October 25, 1877 in Brieg, † May 19, 1957 ) was a German - Swedish chemist.

Life

Riesenfeld was born as the son of the Medical Council Dr. Emanuel Riesenfeld and attended schools in Brieg. After his family had moved to Breslau, he went into the humanistic King William's School, which he left in 1897. He studied natural sciences at the Universities of Heidelberg and Göttingen from 1899. In Göttingen, he was mainly concerned with physical chemistry and received his doctorate with his work "On electrolytic phenomena and electromotive forces at the interface between two solvents ". The thesis has been processed under the guidance of Walther Nernst and is as pioneering in the field of electrochemistry at interfaces of immiscible liquids ( electrochemistry at the interface in between two immiscible electrolyte solutions ( ITIES ) ) received in the history of electrochemistry and physical chemistry. The thus allowed determination of the free enthalpy of transfer of ions between immiscible fluids is of great importance for the biology, physiology, pharmacology and extraction processes in industrial chemistry, because thereby the hydrophilicity of the ion is quantifiable. Riesenfeld developed together with Nernst, a highly sensitive torsion ( torsion balance ), which was known as the " Nernst - scale ".

In 1913, Riesenfeld was appointed Professor to Freiburg im Breisgau and 1920 he was a professor at the Friedrich Wilhelm University in Berlin. Due to his Jewish origins he lost during the period of National Socialism his position and went to Sweden in 1934, where he worked until 1952 at the Nobel Institute for Physical Chemistry. During this time he explored mainly the thermal formation of ozone at high temperatures. Riesenfeld has a well-known textbook and a practical book of inorganic chemistry written, both of which were published in several editions and translated into several languages.

Family

Riesenfeld married in 1911 Johanna ( Hanna ) Johansson ( 1878-1964 ), sister of Maria Johansson ( 1871-1957 ), the second wife of Svante Arrhenius. They had three children:

  • Harald Ernst (1913-2008), Professor of Theology (New Testament) at the University of Uppsala in 1944 Blenda ∞ Hedin ( 1913-2008 )
  • Hans Erik (1914-2001), pediatrician
  • Anna Karin (1920-1992), a language teacher
