Erol Togay

Erol Togay ( born 1 February 1950 in Ankara; † August 9, 2012 in Istanbul) was a Turkish football player and coach. Due to his heading ability he had to player times the nickname " Kafacı Erol " (Eng. Erol header players).

Playing career

Association

Togay began with the club football in the youth of Vefa Istanbul and was here for a professional footballer. For the season 1973/74 he moved to the Süper Lig to Altay Izmir. In the five years in which he played for Altay, he became a national player.

In the summer of 1977, he joined the Turkish club Fenerbahce tradition. Here he was immediately secured a regular place and kept this in his entire three- year career with Fenerbahçe. For the season 1981/82 he left Fenerbahçe and changed within the league to Adana Demirspor. After two seasons in the Mediterranean club he ended his professional footballer career in the summer of 1983.

National

Togay was nominated in November 1975 as part of a qualifying match for the U -23 Football Championship in 1976 against the Soviet U -21 in the squad of the Turkish U-21 national team. In the said meeting on 23 November 1975, he made ​​his debut for the Turkish U- 21st

About six months after this meeting, he received his first nomination for the Turkish national football team in February 1976. He was nominated by then- coach Coşkun Özarı as part of a friendly match against the Iraqi national team for the first time for the levy of the Turkish national team, but only sat on the bench for this encounter.

In the same year he received two more nominations for friendly matches of the Turkish national team, but sat again on the bench. His debut in the Turkish national team, he was under the new coach Doğan Andaç on November 17, 1976 during a qualifying match for the FIFA World Cup 1978 against the national football team of the GDR. Over the next four years he was an integral part of the Turkish national team.

Coaching career

After his playing career, he moved into coaching specialist and served as head coach for a short time Konyaspor and Sakaryaspor. For the season 1990/91 he took Fenerbahce to the post of assistant coach and assisted Guus Hiddink. After Hiddink was sacked, Togay took over on an interim basis the post of head coach and in charge of the team for three games.

The following year he coached a number of clubs in the Süper Lig and the Turkish lower leagues.

Death

Togay ill with multiple sclerosis and died August 9, 2012 from the effects of this disease. Three days later he was buried in front of many prominent guests at the cemetery Zincirlikuyu.
