Error (Baseball)

An error in baseball is in addition to runs and hits the third rating category that is listed in a result table for a game result. An error has often affect the outcome of the game and is the only category of defense that is mentioned in the easy score. The number of errors per game is low, especially in the professional leagues in the normal case, often happened none or only one error.

Importance

Only a faulty action of a defensive player is called Error, commits an offensive player is an error in the sense of the game, this may indeed be included in the statistics of the game, but always wears a different name. The consequence of errors is always advancing one or more players to at least one base or the extension of the percussion right for a batter. As a result, a contrario, that the error of a fielder is only evaluated as Error when an attack player progresses through the action of a base or a batter at bat remains, although it could be off already.

Types of Errors

The most common errors are throw or catch errors. The official scorekeeper assesses the situation and decides which player caused the error. Example: If the shortstop to first baseman throws, there to make a stop and this action does not succeed, because the ball can not be brought under control, then an error during the cast present (Throwing Error) of shortstops or an error by the first baseman when catching the ball ( Missed Catch Error). On the score sheet, the statistics sheet, which is part of the official game report, it is noted whom must be attributed to the error. If the ball is thrown too high or too far to the side so that it can not be caught, it is called an Error ( Overthrow ). To a Fielding Error is when a batted ball on the floor when recording by the player will fritters away. Even when catching a beaten ball out of the air on Error ( Flyball ) is awarded when a defensive player without particular difficulty - the rules speak of ordinary effort - the ball could have caught, but lets him fall to the ground, thereby advancing a runner or the batter reaches a base. From this description in the official rules it follows that the subjective assessment by the scorer decides whether an error is present.

In addition to the frequent throwing and catching errors, there are also so-called mental errors, ie actions where the ball was indeed always handled safely, but was thrown for example, on a base, on which could be no move against an attacker. These are not among the errors and therefore does not flow into the statistics, with two exceptions: a player throws the ball in the area outside the boundaries of the field and rolled into the mound, because he keeps the inning erroneously terminated, then an error to score.

An error does not constitute a reason for a stoppage in play, an action is only interrupted by the umpire if the ball into dead ball territory, thus reaches the area outside the boundaries of the field and is thus declared as no longer playable.

Representation in the result

The game result is displayed as a two-line table. In addition to the columns with the runs for each innings and the total number of runs, there is one column each for total hits and errors of each team, in this example, the fifth meeting of the World Series 1980:

Here one can see that while Philadelphia had fewer hits than Kansas City, but perhaps the two errors the Royals tipped the scales in favor of the Phillies. It is of course not mandatory that have Errors decisive influence on the outcome of the game, but they are often a major influence on the game.

Remarkable

The fact that a professional player in a game committed several errors, is very rare. Is all the more remarkable that it is precisely in the All- Star Game 2008, which collided with the best players in the MLB, Dan Uggla, the second baseman of the National League teams ran a total of three errors. However they had no direct influence on the result, but earned him an inglorious record and the ridicule of the public.
