Erythrulose is a monosaccharide selected from the group of tetroses. Of the two stereoisomeric forms, the D-form is the only natural Ketotetrose. The IUPAC name of the D-form (R ) -1,3,4- trihydroxybutane -2-one. L- Erythrulose has little meaning.

Use

Erythrulose is a component of some self-tanner. In combination with dihydroxyacetone ( DHA), it produces a brown color on the skin. The staining is carried out by the Maillard reaction of the keto group with the free amino groups of the amino acids of the top dead horny layer ( stratum corneum) of the epidermis. Here, brown colored pigments called melanoids form. The tanning effect of Erythrulose without DHA develops after about two days and, according to the manufacturer's last longer. The reaction and the reaction products are completely safe according to current knowledge.

Production

Erythrulose is microbiologically produced by an aerobic fermentation process using the bacterium Gluconobacter.
