Esmeralda (BE-43)

The sail training ship Esmeralda

  • Don Juan de Austria

The sailing ship Esmeralda ( ID: BE -43 ) was originally defined as Don Juan de Austria on behalf of the Spanish Navy at Kiel.

History

The ship was due to a major fire at the yard completely destroyed, the shipyard was insolvent and the Spanish government took over the financing of the reconstruction. Finally, it was finished for the Chilean Navy as Esmeralda and put into service because Spain could not pay back the accumulated debt for Salpeterlieferungen from Chile and this proposed delivery of goods as compensation. The ship is the sixth ship of the Chilean Navy of that name. It undertook numerous training cruises (Spanish for " Cruceros de Instrucción " ), which resulted in ports all over the world. In addition, the Esmeralda also participated in several tall ship regattas.

She is the sister ship of the Spanish four-masted topsail schooner Juan Sebastian de Elcano. In contrast to this, the results of four large gaff sail has the Esmeralda since 1970 on the foremast only Rah and the staysail, no schooner gaff sail, so they can be described as Viermastbarkentine, although the foremast with the three Rahtoppsegeln and the forecourse rather to a Rahschoners recalls that it once was.

Note

After the 1973 military coup against the government of Salvador Allende, the sail training ship was used by the Navy leadership in the port of Valparaíso as a prison ship for opponents of the regime. Later, the ship of the Pinochet government was brought back into service. Due to the use as a prison ship on which also was tortured and killed, denied by many governments as the ship in consequence of driving on their territorial waters. Since the end of military dictatorship in Chile this boycott against the Esmeralda is finished.
