Esplugues de Llobregat
Esplugues de Llobregat [ əspluɣəs də ʎʊβɾəɣɑt ] is a Catalan city in the province of Barcelona, in northeastern Spain. It is located in the comarca of Baix Llobregat. It belongs to the metropolitan area Area Metropolitana de Barcelona.
Location and climate
Esplugues is located on the lower reaches of the Llobregat in the metropolitan area of Barcelona. Due to its location at the foot of the Serra de Collserola it is regularly threatened by heavy downpours by floods. The climate is Mediterranean with hot summers and low rainfall; but these concentrated on the spring and fall.
History
Although the first documented mention of Esplugues from the 10th century comes, finds place in nearby cities ( Sant Just Desvern, Cornella de Llobregat) but also suggest that the area of Esplugues was inhabited before.
Culture
On July 22, the feast of the patron saint of Santa Magdalena is celebrated. The Festa Major takes place at Sant Mateu on September 21.
In Esplugues there is the American School of Barcelona, and since 1986 also a Japanese school. 1977 established the German School of Barcelona, a new school building. This is also the first Spanish class this school were established.
From 1964 to 1973, then demolished in the studio and outside grounds of " Esplugues City ", which had built the production company of the brothers Balcázar there, over one hundred films - most of them Western rotated.
Economy and Transport
Espluges is located at the junction of three major roads, the highway to Martorell, the National Road ( N II ) to Madrid and the road connecting Cornella after Fogars de Tordera. The city is connected to the city by tram Barcelona ( line " Trambaix ").
Until the 1950s Espluges de Llobregat was the fruit and vegetable garden of Barcelona. Today, agriculture plays only a marginal role. Almost the entire district area industrial and residential development is occupied today.
In parallel with population growth through immigration began in the 1950s, the industrialization of the city. The main industries are now the Chemical-Pharmaceutical and Electromechanical industry and freight forwarders. The ceramics industry, which has always been represented in the city because of the strong clayey soil, is now completely gone. Since 1988, takes place every year the trade fair Firesplugues.
