Esteban Vigo

Esteban Vigo Benítez ( born January 17, 1955 in Vélez -Málaga ), short Esteban, is a former Spanish footballer and current football coach.

Career as a football player

Association

Esteban Vigo began his career with CD Málaga and was a regular player of the club from Andalusia, as this in the Primera rise in the 1975/76 season División. As Málaga descended again at the end of the season 1976/77, Esteban was taken from FC Barcelona under contract. In the following ten years, he played exclusively for the Blaugrana. He could never catch on with the Catalans despite regular operations as the undisputed master player and only came in the season 1980/81 to more than 20 league games. With a Spanish Cup, three League Cup and two Cup wins and two titles in the European Cup winner 's time was marked by great successes in Barcelona. For the season 1987/88 Esteban returned to the second division CD Málaga and helped this again to rise. He then played with Málaga league football for two years and a further year División after relegation in the 1989/90 season in the Segunda, before he ended his career.

National

Esteban Vigo participated with the selection of Spain at the 1976 Olympic Games. During his time at FC Barcelona he played three friendly matches for the Spanish national team. His debut was on September 23, 1981 as part of a 0-0 draw with Austria. His second and third international game he completed in October and November of the same year.

Career as a football coach

In the 1995/96 season Esteban took over the third last game of the relegation-threatened UD Almería. Two draws and a defeat ultimately submitted to the league. From 2001 he trained for two years with FC Barcelona C, the third team of FC Barcelona. In the 2003 /04 season he was taken before the twelfth Gameday second division side Deportivo Xerez under contract. The club improved then until the end of the season at nine places in the table and finished ninth. For the season 2004 /05 Esteban left the club and signed up to the league rivals FC Cordoba. Since he imports only one point in the first seven games, but he was released early. In 2006, Esteban was briefly manager of the Romanian first division side Dinamo Bucharest. Matchday 22 of the 2006/07 season he took over the third division side UE Lleida. After mixed results, he was suspended again after ten game days.

Esteban, however, chose to remain in the Segunda División and took over Hércules CF. Even with Hércules he rose then in the 2009/10 season as a table runner in the Primera División. In April 2012, Esteban was coach of second division side UD Almería, but missed with the club the target Ascension Play-Offs. 2012/13 he returned to Deportivo Xerez.
