Estonia–Germany relations

Bilateral relations between Germany and Estonia passed from 9 July 1921 and again since 28 August 1991.

Estonia has an embassy in Berlin and honorary consuls in Hamburg, Ludwigsburg, NTAP, Dusseldorf and Kiel. Germany has an embassy in Tallinn. Both countries are members of the European Union, NATO and of the CBSS.

History

Since Estonia has ratified the territory of the Teutonic Order during the Middle Ages the German Balts played an important role in Estonian society.

The University of Tartu was 1802-1893 a German -language university - about 50 percent of the professors were " German Reich " and another 40 percent of German Balts.

At the end of the First World War ( in February 1918) has become the Russian in 1710 Estonia was occupied by German troops. It succeeded the Estonians in consequence, to assert their independence in the Estonian War of Independence (1918-1920) against Soviet Russia and the standing under German command Baltic country's military. On the part of the Estonians fought the German -Baltic Baltic regiment. 1921 Germany recognized the independence of Estonia, and the two countries established diplomatic relations. In 1939, the German Empire a non-aggression pact with Estonia. In October 1939, the German Balts were forcibly relocated in the " Warthegau ". The Hitler -Stalin Pact, Estonia became part of the Soviet sphere of interest. On 16 June 1940, the Soviet government issued an ultimatum to Estonia and occupied and annexed it then. After the invasion of the German Empire to the Soviet Union on 22 June 1941 Estonia was occupied in August 1941 by German troops. By October 1944, the country had to suffer under German occupation. Then it was again part of the Soviet Union. In 1991, Estonia assert its independence from the mortally weakened Soviet state.

Eight days after the country's independence Germany resumed diplomatic relations with the Baltic state again. Meanwhile, Estonia is integrated into European structures, relations with the EU partners are Germany amicable.
