Étain, France
Étain is a commune in the Meuse department in the Lorraine region. It belongs to the district of Verdun and is capital of the canton Étain. Étain has 3850 inhabitants (1 January 2011 ) to almost 20 km ². The inhabitants call themselves Stainois.
Geography
The municipality is located on the upper Étain Orne, 20 kilometers northeast of Verdun. East of the village is the military airfield Étain - Rouvres.
History
The first documentary mention as Villa de Stain dates from the year 707 Étain at that time was the center of a spell with the villages Longeau, Haraigne, Herméville and Warcq.
1409 occupied an important cloth trade in Étain.
Already before 1790 there was a hospital and a monastery of the Capuchins. The city was fortified by a wall and had four gates.
