Etheostoma

Etheostoma colorosum

The Spring perch ( Etheostoma ) or Grundelbarsche are a genus of the family of the Real perch ( Percidae ). It includes about 140 species. The small, 2.9 to 17 inches long expectant fish usually inhabit fast-flowing waters in North America. The Swamp Spring perch ( Etheostoma fusiforme ) lives in swamps, ponds and slow-flowing waters in the eastern United States, from Maine to Florida. They live down- oriented and have reduced their swim bladder. Because of their size the species is increasingly divided.

Reproduction

During the spawning season the revier propertied males are very colorful. They hide their eggs in the gravel bed of rivers, under rocks or in the case of the bottom spring perch between aquatic plants.
