Ethiopian Constituent Assembly election, 1994

The elections to the Constituent Assembly of Ethiopia from 1994 were the only elections in the history of Ethiopia in which representatives were elected to draft a national constitution, the later Constitution of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.

The elections were held on 5 June 1994, in the transition period instead, and thus were the first elections since the abolition of the People's Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. It was held as a referendum in 1987 after the adoption of the Constitution the end of 1994.

Results

The Constituent Assembly was composed of 547 deputies elected together. The election was won by the Revolutionary Democratic Front of the Ethiopian peoples who could win 484 seats. This party coalition overthrew the communist regime under Mengistu Haile Mariam in May 1991. However, however, have numerous opposition parties boycotted the voting, other political parties received only 63 seats. The coalition was led by the President and later Prime Minister Meles Zenawi.
