2- cyanoacrylic acid ethyl ester, also known as ethyl cyanoacrylate is a nitrile derivative of the ethyl ester of acrylic acid. It belongs to the group of acrylates, more precisely the cyanoacrylates.

Production and representation

2- cyanoacrylic acid ethyl ester can be obtained by reaction of an alkyl cyanoacetate ( ethyl cyanoacetate ) with formaldehyde and subsequent depolymerization.

Chemical Properties

2- cyanoacrylate is a colorless liquid with a characteristic pungent odor, which polymerizes very quickly in an exothermic reaction when in contact with moisture, amines, alkalis and ethanol.

Use

2- cyanoacrylate is mainly used as super glue and cures usually in less than a minute. In addition to the household use it is also used in medicine for stringless sutures. It is also used in forensics to make it visible with the help of Cyanacrylatdämpfen fingerprints. The homologous Methylcyanacrylat was first studied by researchers from Eastman Kodak in the 1930/40er years, and in 1956 patented.
