Iodoethane is a chemical compound from the group of aliphatic, saturated halogenated hydrocarbons.

Production and representation

Iodoethane can be obtained by the reaction of ethanol with iodine in the presence of red phosphorus, or by the addition of hydrogen iodide to ethene.

Properties

Ethyl iodide is a colorless, volatile, flammable liquid with ethereal odor, which is sparingly soluble in water. It has a dynamic viscosity of 0,556 mPa.s at 25 ° C. In case of contact with light itself Iodoethane turn red and slowly decomposes in water. The technical product contains silver, copper or ethanol as a stabilizer.

Use

Ethyl iodide is used as a heavy liquid for mineral analyzes and for organic synthesis.

Safety

The vapors of ethyl iodide can with air when the substance is heated above its flash point form explosive mixtures.
