Use

Ethyl 4-hydroxybenzoate is used as a preservative and is, for example, in shampoos, shower gels and to find other cosmetics. It is also used in research to avoid undesirable bacteria growths on agar plates. In the food industry, the PHB ester is one of the related authorized preservatives and antioxidants.

PHB - ethyl ester is approved in the EU as a food additive under the E number 214. Due to better solubility of the sodium salt ( Natriumethyl p-hydroxybenzoate, E 215 ) is usually used.

Parabens in general can in humans, especially in asthmatics, cause pseudo-allergic reactions such as hives or asthmatic attacks.
