Etilefrin is a drug which is used for circulatory disorders associated with low blood pressure (hypotension ), dizziness, unexplained fatigue, weakness, fibrillation and blackening go before his eyes. Etilefrine is used as a mixture of enantiomers (racemate ) in the form of the hydrochloride

Mechanism of Action

The substance is a direct sympathomimetic with α - and β - sympathomimetic effect. The α -adrenergic effect on α - adrenergic receptors on the blood vessels leads to vasoconstriction and thus to several hours lasting increase in blood pressure. Same time, since a β -adrenergic effect is that caused by the influence on the β - adrenergic receptors of the heart, there is also an increase in the impact frequency (pulse ) and impact strength ( inotropy ) of the heart. The half-life ( elimination ) is about 2 hours.

Adverse effects (selection )

  • Palpitation
  • Ventricular arrhythmia
  • Angina pectoris - like symptoms
  • Voiding dysfunction through stimulation of the bladder sphincter ( interference with emptying of the bladder )
  • Restlessness
  • Increased sweating
  • Insomnia

Contraindications (selection)

  • Hyperthyroidism ( overactive thyroid pathological )
  • Pheochromocytoma ( tumor of noradrenaline, adrenaline and metanephrines produced )
  • Benign prostatic hyperplasia with residual urine ( benign enlargement of the prostate)
  • Cardiac arrhythmia
  • Valvular stenosis (narrowing of the heart valves)
  • Cardiomyopathy ( heart muscle disease)

Doping

Etilefrin is in the list of the World Anti -Doping Agency ( WADA) listed as a stimulant that is banned during athletic competitions.
