Étriac

Étriac is a West commune with 198 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Charente in the Poitou -Charentes.

Location

Étriac is located about 24 km ( driving distance ) south-west of Angoulême in the cultural landscape of the Angoumois at an altitude of about 120 meters above sea level. inst.

Demographics

Until the late 19th century the population of the community fluctuated between 300 and 400; due to the phylloxera crisis in the wine and the mechanization of agriculture, the population then dropped continuously from down to the lows of the past decades.

Economy

The residents of the community lived for centuries of agriculture; the bottoms of the community belong to the Fins Bois Cognac and the wine region so there are several vineyards in the area of the village. The tourism in the form of apartment rentals also contributes since the 1960s in the revenue of the municipality.

History

The presence of a Romanesque church is an indication of the existence of the medieval village.

Attractions

  • The Parish Church ( Église Saint- Germain ) is attributable to the early 12th century; the apse was redesigned in the 15th century and was given a late Gothic tracery windows. Above the transition from the nave to the choir area, there is a small bell gable. External walls and facades are stabilized by buttresses. The otherwise unadorned Archivolts portal is has a cameo bow in the form of a diamond or star rod. Below the pediment with an unframed window runs a console frieze. The nave was originally to be vaulted; today it has only a flat ceiling. A figurative capitals shows the struggle of a woman (?) Against a dragon. The church is recognized as a monument historique since 1965.
  • From a late medieval manor ( logistic ), only one round tower is still preserved. The remaining components were modernized in the 19th century.
