Ettore Messina

Ettore Messina ( born September 30, 1959 in Catania, Sicily ) is an Italian basketball coach who is responsible for the team of CSKA Moscow since 2012. He belongs with four wins so far ( for a total of nine finals ) in each case the highest European club competition ( European Champion Clubs' Cup or Euro League) and numerous national titles the most successful basketball coaches of the continent. 1998 Messina was ( officially Alexander Gomelsky Coach of the Year ) award as the best coach in Europe, 2006 and 2008 as the best coach of the Euro League. As one of 10 coaches, he was one of the 50 greatest personalities elected in the history of European club competition highest 2008.

Career

After Messina had been active since 1976 as a youth or assistant coach of Reyer Venezia Mestre Superga, APU Udine and finally Virtus Bologna, he was promoted in 1989 to head coach of the professional division of Virtus Bologna. He remained there until 1993 and won in that time the Italian Cup, the European Cup Winners' Cup (both 1990) and finally the Italian championship. Until 1997 he was responsible for the Italian national team, with which he participated in three European Championships and in 1997 reached the final.

Messina then returned to Virtus Bologna and achieved the same in the following season, both in the national champion trophy as well as in the Italian championship victory. The following year Virtus won the Italian Cup and reached the final of the European Cup. In 2001 he succeeded with the Triple Bologna, the Euro League as a newly founded Virtus and won league and cup in Italy. After winning the cup in 2002 could be repeated and Bologna had failed in the Euro League only in the finale, Messina moved to Benetton Treviso. A new triple triumph, he just missed in Treviso: Besides the double- gain from the league and cup finals in the Euro League succeeded. After two more seasons with as many cup victories Messina moved to CSKA Moscow. Here Messina immediately won the triple ( Euro League, league and cup ) and also reached the 2007 final of the Euro League, where CSKA successfully defended the title in both the Cup and the championship in Russia. 2008 has again scored the title win in the Euro League, CSKA during the following year lost the final. Again Messina won the national championship each with Moscow. In summer 2009, he moved to Spanish club Real Madrid. After one and a half seasons without a title success Messina filed in March 2011 in his resignation.

June 2011 it was announced that the Los Angeles Lakers Messina offered a contract as an assistant coach. Messina will lead there along with Mike Brown new titles. After only one year left Messina again the Lakers and returned as head coach of CSKA Moscow back to Europe.
