Eu (Seine-Maritime)

Eu [ ø ] is a town with 7351 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the French department of Seine -Maritime in the Haute-Normandie region. It lies on the Bresle, five kilometers from its mouth into the English Channel at Le Tréport.

History

The river Bresle was called in the Middle Ages Ou, later Eu. The medieval chronicler Orderic Vitalis wrote: " Aucum flumen quod dicitur vulgo Ou » - ( German: " The river Aucum, which is called in the vernacular Ou "). Other early medieval varieties of the name were Auvae, Aucia or Auga. This then was the current Eu. The origin is probably in Germanic " awa " (= water ), similar to the Latin " aqua" and the German "Au".

In the 11th century was in Eu a castle which protected the northern border of Normandy. Herein, married in 1050 William the Conqueror and Matilda of Flanders. King Louis XI. let pillage the castle to prevent his extradition to the English.

John of Burgundy erected in its place a country castle, which in turn was replaced in the 16th century at the request Catherines de Clèves and her husband Henri I de Lorraine by a larger castle. The Eu castle is now one of the attractions for the visitor.
