Euchloe ( Elphinstonia ) charlonia is a butterfly of the family of White (Pieridae ).

Features

The moths are oberseits sulfur yellow, and dark brown Apikalflecke and a pale outer drawings. The wings are dusted basal black. The outer edge of the front wing underside has a fine pink line. The Diskoidalfleck is deep black. On the hindwing underside are pale, indistinct dark spots. The hair between the head and thorax are pink.

Similar Species

  • Euchloe penia ( Freyer, 1851) Diskoidalfleck not deep black, along with various features in the genital armature of the males, and the caterpillar and pupal morphology are used for differentiation.

Occurrence

The main distribution area extends from the Canary Islands (Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Graciosa ) and Spain via North Africa, the Sudan and the north of Chad, as well as the Middle East (Saudi Arabia, Syria, Lebanon ) to Pakistan, Turkmenistan and northwest India. In the Canary Islands, the species occurs at altitudes up to 400 meters in front, according to other data to heights of 800 meters. In Spain ( province of Granada) they are found at altitudes up to 800 meters and in the Atlas Mountains it rises up to 2000 meters.

The type name is populated, dry, rocky slopes, arid valleys and oases. In the region of the High Atlas, it was observed that the type Gipfelbalz operates in altitude of 3000 meters.

Biology

The females lay eggs on the underside of leaves. Among the food plants of the caterpillars include various cruciferous and Resedagewächse. Here especially flowers and fruits are befressen. Depending on the region formed from this type two or more generations per year. In very arid regions of slip is controlled by rains. In the Canary Islands, the flight season from December to May and September to October extends. In the north- west Africa's type flies all year, here it is more common from February to October. In Spain, the moths fly from late February to late May.
