Eugen Wüster

Eugen Wüster ( born October 10, 1898 in Wieselburg, † March 29 1977 in Vienna ) was an Austrian linguist and founder of the Inter terminology science.

Life

Eugen Wüster was originally an industrialist and enthusiastic with 15 years of Esperanto, in which he as a translator and the author of several monographs and numerous articles emerged soon in particular on issues of Esperanto terminology and lexicography. He completed an apprenticeship as an electrical engineer and later took over his father's factory.

Between summer 1918 and 1920 he worked in the core, the legendary Großwörterbuch " Encyclopedic Dictionary Esperanto - German " ( " Enciklopedia Vortaro " ) than it was 20 - to 22 - year-old student, which in terms of detail and reliability for early Esperanto vocabulary is unmatched to this day. Because of his research on international technical understanding of the Committee No. 37 for terminology standardization in the International Standard Association ( ISA) was established in 1936.

Wüster has marked the international principles of terminology standardization crucial and contributed essential contribution to the foundation of the modern information society.

He taught at the University of Vienna. From his estate the Eugen- Wüster archive was erected at the Institute for Philosophy and Science Studies at the University of Vienna.

For special achievements in terminology research and science was of Infoterm - financially supported by the cities of Vienna and Wiesel castle, and the International Institute for Terminology Research ( IITF ) and ideally supported by the Austrian UNESCO Commission, the Austrian National Library and the University of Vienna - all three years awarded international Eugen Wüster Prize furnished. 2005 was assigned once the Eugen Wüster special price.
