A qualified lawyer, was the brother of the goldsmith and jeweler Lucien Gaillard, with whom he is often confused, and worked prior to his career as a designer for ten years as a sculptor. He was one of the most important French Art Nouveau artist for interiors through its contribution to the pavilion of the art dealer Siegfried Bing at the Paris World Exhibition of 1900. The co-founder of the Société des artistes Décorateurs explained his working method in 1906 in his essay À propos du Mobilier.
