Eugène Schaus

Eugène Schaus ( born May 12, 1901 in Gonderange; † 29 March 1978 in Luxembourg ) was a Luxembourg politician and long-time minister.

Family and activities as legal scholars

The son of a teacher was the grandfather of the international director of the fashion company " Louis Vuitton ", Philippe Schaus.

The scientists studied law published numerous articles on issues of the European Union and the national and international law. In addition, he was from 1952 to 1954 President of the Bar Association of Luxembourg and Diekirch and law lecturer at the University of Nancy.

Political career

Party founder and deputy

Schaus was originally a member of the " Groupement patriotique et Démocratique ," which he became president in 1952. On April 24, 1955 Schaus was a co-founder and until 1959 the first leader of the Democratic Party ( DP). Schaus was for many years a member of the Chamber of Deputies ( Chambre des Députés ) and sometimes vice-president of the Parliament.

Minister

On 14 November 1945, he was first appointed by Prime Minister Pierre Dupong Minister. In his cabinet he held until 3 July 1951, the Office of the Minister of the Interior. In this office he was replaced by the later prime minister Pierre peace. On 1 March 1947, he also assumed the post of Minister of Justice.

Later he was on 2 July 1959 to July 15, 1964 Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Defence minister of foreign trade in the first cabinet of Pierre Werner.

6 February 1969 to 15 June 1974, he was again Deputy Prime Minister and simultaneously defense, interior and justice minister in the third cabinet of Werner.

As a minister, he advocated for many reforms of Luxembourg law, such as the equality of women, the organization of the armed forces and the divorce and adoption law.

European activities

In addition to the government offices in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg he was in the first half of 1960 and in the first half of 1963, President of the Council of the European Communities. Later he was a member of the European Parliament.
