Eugippius

Eugippius (also: Eugippus ) (* about 465, possibly in North Africa; † after 533 in Castellum Lucullanum in Naples ) is an early Christian saint and the church as a writer and biographer of the monk Severin of Noricum († 482 ) is of particular importance.

Whether Eugippius Severin yet know, is controversial in research. Should he have Severin met yet, such as Uytfanghe it as a possibility would be, but rather to think of a time shortly before the death of the saint. More likely is that Eugippius joining after the death of Severin of the monastic community. Severin himself died in the turmoil of the early migrations on January 8, 482 in Favianis, probably today Mautern in Krems. The relocation of the Severin Convent 488 to Italy seems to have been completed under the direction of Lucillus. At that time Eugippius might already have been a member of the Convention. In the vicinity of Naples, the Community established their new monastery in Castellum Lucullanum, where the remains of Severin has been transferred. After Lucillus ' death Marcian was head of the community. Eugippius then became the third abbot of Severin Order. He wrote a Rule and a highly esteemed in the Middle Ages anthology from the works of Augustine of Hippo and corresponded with various sizes of his time, such as Cassiodorus, Dionysius Exiguus, Fulgentius of Ruspe, Fulgentius Ferrandus as well as a certain proba putatively the Pope Symmachus 's daughter had. His most important work was the Vita Sancti Severini, which was intended as a simple comme moratorium.

The Vita Sancti Severini was, inter alia, published in 1898 by Theodor Mommsen and experienced numerous editions, commentaries and the like. It is decorated in a kind of early church Latin. Of special editions may be mentioned: Eugyppii Abbatis opera a Joanne Herold edita (Basel 1542) and GW Robinson The Life of Saint Severinus (1914 ).
