European Association for Japanese Studies

The European Association for Japanese Studies ( EAJS ) is an association of scientists who endeavor to promote Japan - related research and the interest in Japan around the world, especially in Europe.

The members of the association, founded in 1973, are made up of scientists who deal with Japan, and Japan of respective research interested people from Europe, the USA and Japan itself together. With currently around 1000 members from 45 different nations, the EAJS is the largest Japan related research specialized organization.

The next conference will be held in 2014 in Ljubljana (Slovenia).

Objectives

The EAJS support across academic exchanges across national boundaries and seeks to overcome language barriers and differences in academic conventions and disciplines. For this, the EAJS want an exchange and discussion platform for researchers offer that deal with various topics in Japanese studies. For example, young scientists are supported by foreign scholarships worth up to € 5,000 or EAJS -funded readings and dissertation workshops.

Activities

Since 1976, the EAJS every three years, is organizing a conference in various European cities, get a chance at the scientists to meet people from other disciplines and to share with them. These guest speakers are invited to give a general overview of their particular field of interest.

Furthermore, the EAJS published once a year a bulletin containing information on the EAJS itself, another Japan -related organizations, current events or publications.

All activities of the EAJS be largely funded by the Japan Foundation, the Toshiba International Foundation ( TIFO ) as well as by industry.
