European Association of Zoos and Aquaria

The European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA ) is a regional, animal horticultural association of which about 300 zoos, aquariums and zoo associations from Europe and the Middle East belong. She is a member of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums ( WAZA ).

History

The association was founded in 1988 as the European Community Association of Zoos and Aquaria ( ECAZA ). The founding members were 18 zoological institutions from 8 countries. Main goal was the political influence on the legislative process, which provided for EC -wide standards for zoos and aquariums and tätsächlich 1999, the EU Zoos Directive brought forth. After the fall of the Iron Curtain the way for a pan-European Zoos has had been paved. The application to a corresponding extension of the Association was incorporated during the annual meeting in 1990 in Bristol by Gunther Nogge. Two years later, at the annual general meeting in 1992 in Stuttgart, the association was officially transformed to EAZA. The previously existing independently from the Association EEP Executive Office was simultaneously incorporated into the EAZA. Since 1994, the EEP Conference will take place during the EAZA Annual General Meeting.

EAZA today

The wide spectrum of animal horticultural work correctly, the Executive Committee were asked a number of other committees to the side over the years: Veterinary Committee ( 1989), Membership and Ethics Committee, Legislation Committee, Aquarium Committee ( all 1992), Technical Assistance and Animal Welfare Committee ( 1993), Education Committee, research Committee (both 1995), Conservation Committee (1998) and Marketing Committee ( 2000). The EEP Committee has existed since 1985, making it older than the EAZA. EAZA is dedicated each year to a particularly endangered animal group or a threatened habitat a conservation campaign. Zoo visitors will be made completely striking attention to conservation issues and can make money for selected conservation projects donate. The current campaign pole to pole is dedicated to protecting the polar regions.
