European Community number

Substances of the EC material inventory have EC numbers. EC numbers are an important category of order of the European chemicals legislation ( REACH Regulation). EC numbers have 7 digits and the following syntax: XXX -XXX -X. The EC number is a key identifier of a substance in the IUCLID software, which is used, among other things, submit registration dossier to the European Chemicals Agency ECHA.

From the fact that a substance has an EC number, can not be concluded that it is a hazardous material.

The EC substance inventory includes the following sub- inventories:

  • The EU, European Inventory of Existing Commercial Chemical Substances, EINECS. Altstoff Directory The fabric identifier of this directory is called EINECS number. The EINECS numbers start with 200-001-8 (formaldehyde ). This directory has more than 100,000 entries.
  • The old EU, European List of Notified Chemical Substances, ELINCS. Directory new substance The fabric identifier of this directory is called ELINCS number. ELINCS numbers start with 400-010-9 ( trade name: " Indosol yellow SF- 2RL "). This directory has over 4000 entries.
  • The no- longer polymer list or NLP - list. The fabric identifier of this directory is called NLP number. NLP numbers start with 500-001-0 ("2 - methyl propenes, trimer "). This subdirectory has over 700 entries.

After the pre-registration of REACH, the European Chemicals Agency ECHA has introduced three other identifiers in EC - number - format:

  • Numbers of type 6xx -xxx -x have been and are automatically assigned to substances that have been pre-registered without EC number (within the pre-registration under the REACH Regulation ), but for which a CAS number has been notified,
  • Numbers of the type were 7xx -xxx -x and will be awarded for non-phase -in substances ( " new substance " ), for an inquiry in accordance with REACH Article 26 has been submitted to ECHA,
  • Numbers of type 9xx -xxx -x have been and are automatically assigned to substances that have been pre-registered without EC and CAS number. Such number shall be assigned by the ECHA also for non-phase -in substances that have no CAS number.

These identifiers ( "list numbers" ) are not legally equivalent to the actual EC numbers in spite of the same format. They are not published in the EU Official Journal and are first and foremost a technical aid for the management of substances that have no actual EC number.

The EC number is not identical to the EC index number.
