European Institute of Oncology

The European Institute of Oncology ( Istituto Europeo di in Italian original Oncologia - IEO ) is a cancer research and treatment center based in Milan, Italy. It was founded in 1994 on the basis of a private non -profit legal form. Founder and Scientific Director is still Umberto Veronesi.

The IEO as comprensive Cancer Center is active in three areas, namely clinical treatment, research and education.

Organization

At the head of a supervisory board is with Carlo Buora as president, Andrea Novarese as Vice President, Carlo Ciani as CEO and 19 other members. Shareholders are such well-known, among other companies such as UniCredit, Mediobanca, Allianz, Generali or Pirelli. The management team consists of the Managing Director Stefano Michelini, Scientific director Umberto Veronesi and medical director Leonardo La Pietra.

Clinical activities

The clinical activities are divided into four areas, namely, the surgery, the internal medicine - oncology, diagnosis and prevention as well as certain services. In 2008, about the IEO treated 38,500 patients and performed 12,370 surgeries.

Research

The research area includes both Experimental Oncology and Epidemiology and Biostatistics. An annual research report provides information on the total as well as individual services information. In the year 2007 272 scientific papers were published with a cumulative impact factor of 1878.70.
