European Studies

European Studies ( German: European Studies or European Studies, but also in European Studies ) is an academic degree program, the universities offer a priority of the EU Member States, in part, as well as universities in other countries and continents.

Structure and content of the study program

The degree program provides economic, political and jurisprudential, cultural and linguistic competence in relation to the European Union. Graduates of this program are active in various fields, but especially in political and economic professions that are related to the EU, its institutions and the European market combined (politics and business consultants, international companies, EU institutions, NGOs, etc. ).

There is both a Bachelor of Arts (BA) European Studies as well as the corresponding master 's degree program, but not necessarily build on each other. After the Bachelor's degree examination in a course of study (eg social sciences) students can also acquire skills in the field of societies and social systems of Europe by the Master of European Studies. The B. A. European Studies can complement graduates through various Master's programs. Increasingly, there is also the opportunity to gain binational double degrees, such as at the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt-Oder with the IEP in Strasbourg, the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan İstanbul Bilgi Üniversitesi, or.

The course varies depending on the university. At the TU Chemnitz there is the program in three orientations (cultural, social sciences and economics ). At the universities of Karlsruhe and Passau, the focus is in the cultural sciences. In Bremen and at the Viadrina in Frankfurt / Oder transformation processes in Eastern Europe in the foreground, in Rome are the EU's relations with the countries in the Mediterranean region. In Maastricht are political, economic and commercial law aspects. At the University of Bonn (Center for European Integration Studies ) oriented the postgraduate degree program at Politics and Law ( Governance and Regulation) in the European Union ( explicitly with an EU-wide perspective) and is strongly aligned to the career prospects of the students. At all universities, however, is an interdisciplinary course of study that includes, among other things, the subregions European history, European law, economics, political science, sociology, European Culture, European Literature and European languages.

The European Studies can include modules from the following subjects:

  • History
  • Jurisprudence
  • Economics
  • Political science
  • Sociology
  • Psychology
  • Cultural Studies
  • Literature
  • Linguistics
