The 54th Euro Vision Song Contest was held in Moscow on May 12th, 14th and 16th 2009. The winner was with a record of 387 points of the Norwegian contribution Fairytale by Alexander Rybak.

Host country was the first time Russia after the Russian contribution Believe by Dima Bilan at the 53rd Euro Vision Song Contest in Belgrade had won.

New voting rule

In this year came for the first time since 1996 nationwide juries used. The countries voting was composed of equal numbers of spectators and jury vote. In the semifinals, scored the televoting for the first nine places. Return of Slovakia

Slovakia participated for the first time since 1998 part again. Boycott plans in advance
