Eusko Trenbideak – Ferrocarriles Vascos

EuskoTren represents Eusko Trenbideak - Vasco Ferrocarriles, SA and is a public railway company in the Spanish Basque Country. It is 100% owned by the Basque province of government, was established in 1982. EuskoTren also operates a number of long-distance bus and tram lines of the cities of Bilbao and Vitoria. The tram networks in Bilbao and Vitoria are operated under the name EuskoTran ( a composition of EuskoTren and tranbia / tranvía, the Basque or Spanish name for tram). In 1995, a portion of the railway system, including its staff on the Metro Bilbao has been transferred.

EuskoTren has an electrified narrow-gauge network on which it implements the S -Bahn traffic around Bilbao and San Sebastian, and between these cities. Both towns have tunnel sections in the downtown area, which serve as trunk routes for the S-Bahn. The State Railways RENFE complements the S-Bahn networks with a wide-track infrastructure.

The railway network of EuskoTren belonged to the railway company feve, which operates a 1,000 km-long narrow gauge network in the north of Spain. EuskoTren arose after the feve sold part of its rail network. The networks of EuskoTren and feve are still connected to each other in order to realize freight between the Basque Country and mining sites in Asturias. It is, however, a single track in poor condition, which makes a big circle around the city of Bilbao. Network Cross- passenger does not exist, and this route after a renovation to serve as a link road to enable a transition between the regional rail lines outside the city center of Bilbao.

EuskoTren currently planning to build a new headquarters, including an underground station in Durango in the province of Vizcaya. In the " Operación Durango " designated construction projects, a total of about 150-160 million euros will be invested. The international tender for the construction won the renowned Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid.

Lines

EuskoTren the company for all feve - lines were east of Bilbao transferred and set up as a new endpoint bag station in the old town establishing. There starts the only remote connection to San Sebastian, which is conducted as line 1. This route is the main route of the network, operating on random routes individual regional rail lines. In addition to the trains, which run on the main route from Bilbao to San Sebastian there are sections complement traffic with the numbers 1D and 1K. From the terminus in Bilbao starts EuskoTran tram, which runs through the city center.

Not connected to the rest of the network leads to line 4 completely isolated from Lezama to Bilbao, where it ends underground in the old town. For this line, there are plans to convert into a subway, the existing tunnel should lead in the future on the route of Metro Bilbao.

In the Basque town of Eibar, the company operates also a tram line that is not led by the name EuskoTran.

Between Lasao and Azpeitia drives a steam powered museum train on a partially disused track. There is also the Basque Railway Museum.

Because of the fourteen tunnel between Irun and San Sebastian this route and there trains running are nicknamed " El Topo " ( The Mole ).
